The fact that humans have tendency to overindulge（过度放纵） is not secret. However it's very unusual to hear about animals doing the same. But that is the case with nine year-old Ernie, a loggerhead sea turtle at the Manchester Sea Life aquarium.
Ernie is fed three meals a day and each is made up of delicious and nutritious foods like lettuces, cabbages, broccoli stems, cucumbers and fish heads. However, after taking every bite, Ernie doesn't have the desire to rest. Instead. he swims around for snacks-some food dropped by the other species living there.
Unfortunately, the extra food has caused some problems. According to Lucy Handel.
aquarium curator（馆长）， Ernie is few pounds above his healthy weight. When they find the cause, they have no choice but to cut down his food amount.
Since there is not much they can do about Ernic's continuing snacking. Lucy and her team
have decided to cut his meal by a third. They believe that this diet will allow Ernie to go back to his normal figure within 8 to 10 weeks！
Loggerhead turtles are known to eat foods all day. However, in the wild, they swim for miles, burning calories almost as quickly as they consume them. But to Ernie, the exercise of swimming in the tank is clearly not enough to keep him as fit as he should be.
Loggerhead turtles spend most of their lives in water. Females only come to the shore to lay eggs. The adult ones are preyed（捕食） on only by large fish like sharks, and are therefore not vulnerable. However, the eggs and young ones are often eaten by many animals. This together with accidental deaths caused by fishing nets, loss of nesting habitats and the fact that females lay eggs every two to three years, has placed these animals on the highly endangered species list.
